I AM A MONSTER, YOU KNOW…

Quasi and Esme requested by modern-day-esme!

HELLFIRE
Had to pause in my requests to post this, since someone reblogged my last Frollo piece just to declare that this song is “awful.”  They are clearly not appreciating this sequence for its incredible artistry and subtext.  This is not about “ew, Frollo’s a perv.” This is about a man who has devoted himself to a doctrine that represses many natural human instincts, particularly where sexuality is concerned.  He’s a “pious” man who claims godliness but persecutes others quite viciously.  Here, his subconscious is acknowledging what a terrible person he really is, but he can’t openly face that fact.  He’s also struggling with this desire for something forbidden—sex, as well a woman, a creature so often regarded as “evil” in Frollo’s dogma.  He’s tormented by the thought that simply by wanting a woman he, too, is evil, and fears eternal damnation in hell. It’s really quite sad.  And it’s some pretty heavy stuff, especially for Disney. And that’s not even getting into the masterful storyboarding and artful execution of this scene.   It’s definitely a scene that might leave a bad taste in your mouth, but you can’t deny the incredible artistry and the depth of what’s going on here.
